100 Compositions
For the first assignment of IB, we were told by our teacher to take photos of 100 compositions of the everyday things around us, that are most popular which relates to Pop Art. This was actually a very good excercise because once I really got into it, I began to start playing around with the lighting and the spacing of objects.
With these pictures, I thought of the shadows and how I would try to copy those pictures. The way I would paint or shade the different objects. I threw in a transparent bottle because I had never attempted something like that but I was always fascinated by the way that other people had attempted to paint or to shade it. I also added a piece of cake because I really liked the texture of it and was wondering how I would paint it.
I began changing the objects I began with because I thought that the more objects I had, the more ideas I would get and there would be more substance. I added the onions to the image because I really liked the texture of the roots of the big onion and also the texture of the onion itself because it would be hard to attempt that because I think we would have a base color and then add the shading on top of it.
This excerise was a major help for me because I figured out how to make compositions and how I could move around objects to create an area of focus and then move the objects around again so there wouldn't be an area of focus. I learnt how to use shadows to create a 3D effect.
Abstract Pieces
From my 100 compositions, I had to choose one composition and draw it in 11 different ways. The first one I did was a line drawing, I drew it a bit too light so unfortunately it couldn't be seen so well. Then I did a texture one where I used different papers to create different textures. Then from that image, I did a water color painting to show color. From there, I did a charcoal drawing to show value. and finally I did a painting but only the outside to show negative space.
From my negative space painting, I used water color paints to show complementary colors. If I were to improve this, I would use some other media to show the different colors because I don't think it was so effective in this painting. After that, I used some acrylic paint to show the positive space. The next one I did was overall my favorite because, I had to change all my lines to straight lines. I think I did it very effectively because it changed the whole image and that was the whole purpose of the excerise.
Study Drawing of the skeletal system of a T-Rex
I wanted to do a study drawing of something because I wanted to improve my sketching and shading skills with pencils. I decided that a skeleton would be the best, I didn't want to do the human body because I had already attempted that 2 years ago and it was effective. The skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex sort of popped into my mind because they have a very interesting skeletal system. The back vertebrae was the most difficult to draw because there were so many small individual bones and so I had to be very careful when drawing it.
Techniques-Acrylic Paint
One of the first techniques we worked on was with acrylic paints. I had already worked with these paints before because they are my favorite type of media to use. I took one of the pieces from the 11 abstract pieces I did. I think my outcome was very effective in showing the blending of colors. I chose to do a monochrome painting because I really like black and white together, I think they compliment each other very well.
